How Long Does Drywall Repair Take? A Denver Homeowner’s Guide

How Long Does Drywall Repair Take? A Denver Homeowner’s Guide

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is: “How long is this drywall repair going to take?”

The answer depends on more than just the size of the hole.

At Patch Pros Drywall Repair, we handle everything from small plumbing and electrical cutouts to multiple repairs throughout a home and large ceiling patches. A straightforward repair can often be completed in a single day, while projects involving multiple patches, extensive finishing, skim coating, or full-wall and ceiling texture work can take several days.

The biggest thing homeowners should understand is that installing the drywall is usually only part of the job. Making the repair disappear is where the time, skill, and finishing work come in.

How Long Does a Typical Drywall Repair Take?

For many common drywall repairs in the Denver area, the drywall and texture work can be completed in about one day.

For example, a typical 16” × 16” opening left by a plumber, electrician, or HVAC contractor can often be patched, finished, and texture-matched in a single visit.

Every project is different, but a general timeline might look like this:

  • Small holes, cracks, and minor damage: A few hours to one day
  • Typical plumbing or electrical cutout: About one day
  • Several moderate drywall repairs: Approximately one to two days
  • 10–15 patches throughout a home: Approximately two to three days
  • Large wall or ceiling repairs: Often one to two days or longer, depending on the finishing and texture work required
  • Painting: May require an additional visit after the repaired and textured surfaces have dried

These are general timelines. The location of the damage, existing texture, number of repairs, drying requirements, and the level of finish needed can all affect how long a project takes.

Why Can a Small Drywall Patch Turn Into a Larger Project?

Homeowners sometimes look at a hole in the wall and understandably think the repair should only take an hour or two.

The actual patch might.

But professional drywall repair isn’t simply about filling the hole.

After damaged drywall is removed or a new piece is installed, the repair still needs to be taped, coated, finished, sanded, and blended into the surrounding surface. If the wall or ceiling has texture, that texture then needs to be matched as closely as possible.

The goal isn’t simply to close the hole.

The goal is to make it look like the hole was never there.

That finishing process can require considerably more work than installing the piece of drywall itself.

Multiple Patches on the Same Wall Can Change the Entire Scope

The number of repairs isn’t the only consideration. Where those repairs are located matters too.

If a home has several patches spread throughout different rooms, each repair may be able to be finished and texture-matched individually.

However, if there are multiple patches on the same textured wall, trying to blend every repair separately may leave noticeable differences across the surface.

In those situations, Patch Pros may recommend skim coating the entire wall and applying new texture across the full wall.

That adds time to the project, but it can produce a much more consistent finished appearance than having several individually blended areas across one surface.

This is why a project with 10–15 patches can reasonably take two to three days, depending on where those patches are located and what needs to be done to achieve the best finished result.

Why Large Ceiling Repairs Can Require More Than Just Patching the Hole

Ceiling repairs are another good example of why the size of the damaged area doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Consider a roughly 4’ × 8’ ceiling repair.

Installing and finishing the replacement drywall is only part of the process. Depending on the existing ceiling texture and the location of the repair, applying new texture only over that 4’ × 8’ section may leave a noticeable difference between the repaired area and the rest of the ceiling.

To make the repair disappear as well as possible, it may be necessary to skim coat the entire ceiling and then apply new texture across the full surface.

That creates considerably more finishing work than simply patching the original opening, but the objective is a ceiling that looks consistent rather than a ceiling with an obvious repaired section.

Texture Matching Affects the Timeline

Texture matching is one of the most important parts of a professional drywall repair.

Denver-area homes can have a variety of wall and ceiling finishes, including:

  • Orange peel
  • Knockdown
  • Splatter
  • Stomp textures
  • Skip trowel
  • Smooth finishes
  • Popcorn ceilings

Some repairs can be blended locally. Others require a larger area to be refinished to create a consistent appearance.

The existing texture, age and condition of the surface, lighting, and location of the repair can all influence how much area needs to be worked.

That’s why we evaluate the finished surface, not simply the dimensions of the hole, when determining the scope and timeline of a drywall repair.

Does Painting Add Another Day?

It can.

Drywall repair, texture, and painting are separate stages of the finishing process.

When new texture is applied, it needs sufficient time to dry before it can be properly painted. Depending on the project, this means we may need to return for an additional visit to complete the painting.

We would rather allow the repair to dry properly than rush the final step simply to finish everything in one day.

If you’re requesting painting along with your drywall repair, we’ll account for that when discussing the expected project timeline.

What About Water-Damaged Drywall?

Water-damaged drywall can require additional consideration because the source of the moisture needs to be corrected before the repair is closed.

A drywall contractor can make a ceiling look perfect, but if the plumbing leak, roof leak, or other moisture source hasn’t been addressed, the damage can return.

Once the source of the water has been corrected and the area is ready for drywall work, we can determine how much material needs to be removed and replaced and whether the surrounding wall or ceiling needs additional finishing or texture work.

How Can You Get a More Accurate Timeline for Your Drywall Repair?

Photos are extremely helpful.

When you contact Patch Pros, sending clear pictures of the damaged wall or ceiling can often give us enough information to provide an initial idea of the scope, pricing, and expected timeline.

For the most useful assessment, try to include:

  • A photo showing the entire wall or ceiling
  • A closer photo showing the actual damage
  • Approximate measurements of the damaged area
  • Photos of any additional patches
  • Information about what caused the damage
  • Whether you would like painting included

Seeing the entire surface is particularly important because it helps us determine whether an individual texture blend is appropriate or whether a larger section, entire wall, or ceiling may need to be refinished.

Professional Drywall Repair in Denver

Most homeowners don’t just want a hole filled. They want the repaired wall or ceiling to look like it was never damaged in the first place.

That’s why two drywall projects with similarly sized holes can have very different timelines.

A typical plumbing or electrical cutout may be completed in one day. Multiple repairs throughout a home may take two or three days. A larger ceiling repair may require skim coating and retexturing beyond the original damaged area. And when painting is included, an additional visit may be necessary to allow the new texture to dry properly.

At Patch Pros Drywall Repair, we provide professional drywall repair, ceiling repair, drywall finishing, and texture matching throughout Denver and the surrounding metro area.

If you have drywall damage and want to know how long your specific repair will take, send us photos of the damaged area. We’ll take a look at the entire surface and explain what we recommend, how long the project should take, and what will be required to get the best finished result.
