In many cases, yes. If only a small portion of a popcorn ceiling has been damaged, we may be able to repair the drywall and reproduce the surrounding popcorn texture rather than removing the texture from the entire ceiling. As with any texture match, the size and location of the repair matter. A relatively small repair surrounded by a large amount of existing texture gives us more room to blend the new texture into the old. A larger repair occupying a significant portion of a small ceiling can be much more difficult to disguise. In those situations, we’ll discuss whether it makes more sense to attempt a localized popcorn texture match or refinish a larger portion of the ceiling. Can Popcorn Ceiling Texture Be Matched? We can often get very close, but matching an existing popcorn ceiling isn’t as simple as spraying new material over the patch. Existing popcorn textures vary in size, density, application, age, previous paint, and overall appearance. We evaluate the existing texture and adjust the application to reproduce it as closely as possible. Like any drywall texture, an exact match can’t always be guaranteed. Our goal is to make the repaired area blend into the existing ceiling as closely as humanly possible. What Happens During Popcorn Ceiling Removal? Removing the popcorn texture is only one part of the project. Before work begins, the room and surrounding surfaces need to be properly protected because ceiling work can create significant debris and mess. The existing texture is then removed using the appropriate method for the condition of the ceiling. Once the popcorn is removed, we can see the actual drywall surface underneath. That’s when the finishing work really begins. What Is Underneath a Popcorn Ceiling? This is something homeowners don’t always realize: A ceiling covered with popcorn texture was not necessarily originally finished to look good as a smooth ceiling. Popcorn texture can hide drywall joints, surface variations, previous repairs, minor imperfections, and other finishing issues that weren’t particularly noticeable underneath a heavy texture. Once the popcorn is removed, those imperfections can become much easier to see. Depending on the condition of the drywall underneath, the ceiling may require additional taping, joint compound, repairs, sanding, or skim coating before it’s ready for its new finish. That’s why popcorn ceiling removal should be evaluated as a complete ceiling-finishing project rather than simply pricing the amount of texture that needs to be scraped off. Does the Ceiling Need to Be Skim Coated After Popcorn Removal? Sometimes. If the underlying drywall is already in excellent condition, only limited finishing work may be necessary. However, if removing the popcorn exposes visible joints, damaged areas, uneven finishing, previous repairs, or other imperfections, skim coating the ceiling may provide a much more consistent foundation for the new finish. Smooth ceilings are especially demanding because there is no texture to help disguise surface variations. Depending on the condition of the ceiling and the finish you want, multiple coats of joint compound, sanding, and additional surface preparation may be necessary. What Can Replace a Popcorn Ceiling? Once the old popcorn texture has been removed and the drywall has been properly prepared, there are several possible finishing options. Depending on the project, the ceiling can be prepared for: • A smooth finish • Orange peel • Splatter texture • Knockdown • Stomp texture • Another appropriate ceiling finish We’ll discuss the appearance you’re looking for and what level of drywall preparation will be required to achieve it. What About Painted Popcorn Ceilings? Painted popcorn texture can be considerably more difficult to remove than unpainted texture. Paint can seal the surface and make the texture more resistant to moisture and scraping, which can increase the amount of labor required to remove it without unnecessarily damaging the drywall underneath. If your popcorn ceiling has previously been painted, let us know when requesting an estimate because that can affect how the project needs to be approached. What About Water-Damaged Popcorn Ceilings? Water damage should be addressed before simply applying new popcorn texture over the stain. The source of the water needs to be identified and corrected first. If the drywall is still wet, soft, sagging, deteriorated, or otherwise compromised, the affected material may need to be removed and replaced before the ceiling is refinished. Once the underlying problem has been corrected and the drywall repair is complete, we can evaluate whether the existing popcorn texture can be matched or whether refinishing a larger area would provide a better finished appearance. What About Asbestos in Popcorn Ceilings? Some older popcorn ceiling materials may contain asbestos. You cannot reliably determine whether a ceiling contains asbestos simply by looking at it. When the age or circumstances of a ceiling create a potential asbestos concern, appropriate testing should be completed before the texture is disturbed.
